Welcome to Cyclopaedia 3: Atlantis. Cyclopaedia is a monthly article on the InnRoads Ministries website. This month’s article comes via request from reader Nik Palmer who requested I delve into the myths and legends of the lost city of Atlantis. What do you think of when you hear Atlantis? I instantly thought of Jason Momoa who will soon be playing Aquaman protecting the oceans of the Earth and previously played Ronon Dex on Stargate Atlantis. Also dancing around my mind are a juxtaposition of ancient runes and high technology, alien visitors and Nazi’s seeking their origins, and underwater worlds. Watch out for aliens, Nazis, and sea creatures for we seek the legendary lost city of Atlantis.

Overview
Atlantis brings many different visions to mind. Is it just an allegory for the ideal state? Is it a mythical island of a great ancient civilization? Is it a lost island or nation swept from the earth by a great catastrophe? What was first written about by Plato has spawned great philosophical debates, funded massive archeology quests, driven occult histories, and been the foundation of some amazing fantastical adventures.
For this Cyclopaedia, we will focus on Atlantis as a factual, fictional, and fantastical location.
Atlantis: Fact or Fiction?
Sciences, archeologists, philosophers, adventures, and historians continue to debate the origins, myths and truths about Atlantis.
- The Thule Society and Ahnenerbe Institut each sought to prove the existence of the mythic island and its origins of the Aryan race.
- Several archeologists and scholars point to the lost city as the origin of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations.
- Early historical maps show islands and continents that no longer exist. Could they have existed and then vanished?
- Could the lost worlds of Atlantis, Lemuria, Mu, Ys, and others all be legends pointing to the same place?
Following are sources of information pertaining to Atlantis to assist prospective game masters, game designers, writers, and storytellers in knowing where to start their research.
